Eduard 1/72 Su-2 Photoetch (#72 366) for the ICM KitBy Matt Bittner |
The Eduard photoetch set for the ICM Su-2 is very nicely done. While it's the only photetch company to not include flaps, this is a good thing if you don't want to replace the flaps.
The photoetch set starts out by replacing some of the kit parts and adding more to the engine. It then moves into the cockpit and bomb bay. While the bomb bay isn't as comprehensive as both the Ace and Part sets, it still is a good addition to this area. After the pieces are added to the pilot's cockpit (including the usual clear film for the instrument panel and other instruments (which Eduard has already provided white behind the film)), additions continue into the navigator/bombadier's area. Eduard includes a fold-up set for the sides and floor on this area. I'm not sure of the fit but knowing Eduard they have done their homework. They also include some radios and some switches for the rear 'pit, but it isn't as comprehensive as the Ace set. Photoetch details are also provided for the ball turret (again, not as much as the Ace), some smaller external things, and the highlight of this set - the undercarriage/underside detail. Provided are replacements for all undercarriage and bomb bay doors. In addition there are photoetch separate bomb racks - with sway bars - that were seen on some Su-2s outside of the landing gear. In fact, Eduard are the only ones to provide replacement landing gear doors and these separate bomb racks..
While the interior pieces aren't as comprehensive as the Ace set, it's the inclusion of the undercarriage pieces that make this set stand out.
