Curtiss P-40 in 1/72nd Scale

P-40M-5-CU

P-40M-5-CU ( Uwe Borchert ). I made this Curtiss from the Academy-kit in 1:72 scale. The kit has some little defects for example the exhausts were too big. I add a homemade vacuformed canopy. The visor is stolen from my Su-2 Eduard-Etchset. With Humbrol coulors I made the colouring of this airplane. The stars came from my decal-collection and the numbers were made with an ALPS-printer. I had only two b/w-fotos but no informations about the aircraft "White 281".

P-40E

P-40E ( Larry Baldwin ). Hasegawa kit.

P-40K

P-40K ( Larry Baldwin ). "Revell kit with the True Details Cockpit and Wheel sets. The canopy is from Squadron."

Tomahawk Mk.IIA

Tomahawk MkIIB ( Libor Jekl ). AML kit. This Tomahawk from 126. IAP was flow by S. Rydnyi during "Battle of Moscow" period on autumn 1941. The pilot shot down two Ju 88 and a Bf 109 in this particular plane; however, he died in it later on when the plane crashed due to an engine failure. The AML kit is probably the best "early" P-40 kit around in 1/72 scale, however due to its nature a lot of trial fitting and sanding was necessary to achieve a good fit. The resin and photo-etched parts included in the kit help a lot to improve somewhat basic plastic parts, especially the cockpit area and the wheel wells. The kit was first painted with Gunze acrylics, then with white enamel paint and subsequently the weathered effect was achieved by sanding with fine grade wet&dry.

Tomahawk Mk.IIB

Tomahawk MkIIB ( "Phil" ). Khlobistov's Tomahawk MkIIB, white 58, 147 IAP, Mourmansk, winter 41-42. This is the Zvezda kit. The interior of the cokpit was scratchbuilt but can hardly be seen due to the thickness of the canopy. The model was brush painted. The fit was surprisingly good in comparison to the first impression given by the crude looking sprues.

P-40E

P-40E (  István Vadász ). Hasegawa, decals: Microscale, type: P-40E flown by A. A. Matveyev 154, IAP Leningrad territory, Plekhanovo airfield, summer 1942.

P-40N(-5)

P-40N-5 ( Erik Pilawskii ). P-40N, -5 block. Ex-USAAF, 21-?98? (obscured in the photo), handed over in Persia via Lend-Lease on 28 Feb 1943, to VVS ferry pilots, appearing in the inventory of the 191 IAP on 6 Mar/43. "White 93" was piloted by Hero of the Soviet Union Alexandr Chubeyev on 22 May 1943, the date on which he was awarded the Gold Star. The finish was standard O.D.Green over Medium Grey, and the upper and lower wing insignia had been removed with turpentine; the fuselage stars were over-painted in VVS Dark Olive.

P-40E

P-40E ( Ilya Grinberg ). "P-40E machine of Lt. Col.Matveev, commander of the 154 IAP. This is a Hasegawa kit with True Details resin cockpit and wheels, Eduard's PE parts (I used instrument panel instead of a resin one, did not use the rest of interior details, and used wheel wells and flaps)."

Tomahawk Mk.IIb

Tomahawk IIB (P-40C) ( Erik Pilawskii ). Built from the old Academy P-40C kit, this machine is finished as Alexei Khlobistov's "White 58" while serving with the 147 IAP in 1942. The weathering was "reverse-applied", meaning that the white paint was painted on first, and then the 'underlying' color applied over that to achieve a worn effect.

P-40M

P-40M ( Matt Bittner ). P-40M, Academy kit with extras, 191st IAP. More details can be found in the full-build review. Note that the paint scheme is wrong (there should be no black in the nose and no green, being olive drab only) but will be fixed in the future.
