Lavochkin/Gorbunov/Gudkov LaGG-3 in 1/72nd Scale

LaGG-3, Series 11

LaGG-3 ( Alex Ruchkovsky ). "609 IAP, Pilot V.Mironov, summer 1942. Kit: Toko 1:72. Corrected: outline of wing , shape of oil cooler intake and cowl and sections of rear fuselage. Replaced sliding canopy. Scratchbuilt interiors. ELF wheels. All markings airbrushed."

LaGG-3, Obl.

LaGG-3 ( Bill Arnold ). 1/72 Toko/Roden LaGG-3 ("Series 66"), built OOB. Bill added seat belts and applied an oil paint wash over a coat of Future.

LaGG-3, Series

LaGG-3 ( Clarence Wentzel ). This is the Toko kit finished as a "Series 1".

LaGG-3, 'Lightened and Improved'

LaGG-3, 'Lightened and Improved' ( Erik Pilawskii ). "I've always wanted to do a model of Yuri Shipov's ("White 43") late series LaGG-3 'White 43', and so I took the occasion to build my last copy of the older Dakoplast 'Series 66' kit as this machine. Decals came from a newer Toko sheet, and the model was finished in an AMT-11/-12 livery common for the 9 IAP ChF. There is debate as to whether Shipov's LaGG carried a star marking on the fin; I chose to omit this for the time being."

LaGG-3, Early Series

LaGG-3, Early Series ( Erik Pilawskii ). "This early Series four-gun Gor'ky built machine was photographed north of Leningrad in service with the 145 IAP, ca. Spring 1942; pilot is unknown. It wears the classic Zavod 21 'banded application' of the time in Green/Black, and the windscreen framing appears to have been left unpainted. The rudder has obviously been painted in the field, and no effort has been made to rectify the bisected star on the fin. I used an example of the pre-Toko LaGG-3 kit mold manufactured by ICM for this model, and although the surface detail was outstanding and similar to the former, the fit in this case was somewhat unrefined."

LaGG-3, Obl.

LaGG-3, Obl. ( Erik Pilawskii ). This machine shows off the VVS southern scheme of Black over Sand Brown to good effect. The kit is the wonderfully detailed Dakoplast LaGG-3 "Series 66", built completely OOB (a few panel details were added by pencil). This model represents "Blue-Green 2" of Alexei A. Boguslavsky of the 93 IAP, Black Sea Fleet.

LaGG-3, Obl.

LaGG-3, Obl. ( Erik Pilawskii ). "Another Dakoplast 'Series 66' kit, OOB. First, I apologize for the horrid photography, which makes this hard to see. This unusual scheme is a bit of conjecture. The subject is the curious late model LaGG-3 of the 88 IAP pictured on p.25 of Red Stars . The machine has obviously been re-painted recently, and there are three distinct colors present on this aircraft. The exact pattern of application was gleaned from a photograph of another similar-looking 88 IAP LaGG-3. The colors involved were rather baffling at first, but after analysis it occurred to me that what might have been done was that this unit seems to have over-sprayed the Dark Green areas of the scheme with Ochre. An explanation for this behavior might stem from the fact that the 88 IAP spent most of the latter half of 1943 engaged very heavily in escorting Il-2s, aircraft which would then be wearing the new Ochre/Olive scheme introduced in 1943 at Zavod 18; perhaps they felt it was prudent to have matching camouflage colors? All decals were printed on an ALPS-1000, and I see that the inscriptions came out a bit small. Hopefully I will correct this in future and take some better pictures...."

LaGG-3, Series 4

LaGG-3, Series 4 ( Ilya Grinberg ). A very nice example of the early LaGG-4 "White 44", completed with the superb Toko (originally ISM) kit. "LaGG-3 is of 44 IAP as shown at Red Stars on page 25, and Sovetskie Istrebiteli on page 29. Look at the sliding canopy-- it is removed! This is an ICM (!) kit that was never oficially announced and later sold to TOKO. The kit is out of the box, the front canopy is Falcon vacuumform. The machineguns are from fine tubing and pitot tube from fine tubing are added."

LaGG-3

LaGG-3 ( István Vadász ). 1/72 LAGG-3 series 35 Dakoplast built out of the box, painted according to the assembly drawing with Humbrol paints. The plane was flown by Captain G.A.Grigoriev 6. IAC PVO Moscow 1942.

LaGG-3, Series

LaGG-3 ( Shawn Lynch ). This is the Toko kit finished as a "Series 1". Here is a complete explanation of everything done to the kit.

LaGG-3, Early Series

LaGG-3 ( Matt Bittner ). This is the Toko kit finished as an "Early Series" machine. There are more images of the model in the full build article.
