Il-2 'arrow', Gary Byrne. "Here is my rendition of Accurate Miniatures' 1/48 scale IL-2M3. I was eager to try one of the official NKAP schemes but was quite disappointed to find out that not only did the AC depicted in the instructions not use this scheme but it wasn't an 'arrow' either. I decided to depict "White 61" which is mentioned in the article "Three-Colour Camouflage and the Il-2 Arrow" using spare stars, masking and a little hand done artwork. Construction was out-of-the-box for the most part with the exception of replacing the gunner's handle/step with wire, adding paper and wire seatbelts and one replacing one of the landing gear indicators with one made from stretched sprue as the original left my tweezers at the speed of light never to be seen again. I was going to use True Details wheels but once on they looked too small to me so I put the kit wheels on instead. I used Model Master enamels with acrylics for weathering. I'm not sure how beat up this AC really was but I've seen pictures of others that were well worn. One showing the wing roots worn right to the bare metal stuck in my head and I've tried to recreate that look here. After preshading the panel lines I painted a wide section of the wing roots and leading edges of the wings with gun metal. Once this was dried I dabbed liquid mask in irregular patterns over those areas. The product I used is called Miskit by Grumbacher and is found in artist's supply shops. This dries like a rubbery film and, once the final coat of paints are on, lifts off easily by rubbing with your finger or an eraser and leaves realistic looking paint chips."

Il-2 AM-38F, Double-seat ( Steve Evans ) - "This is the Accurate Miniatures kit, built straight from the box apart from the addition of seat belts and brake lines. Although the under-wing guns don't go with this particular aircrafts markings, the chap I was building it for (Dai) really fancied having the big guns, so who am I to argue? The aircraft is finished in the soft edged Factory no.18 three-colour scheme, all done in White Ensigns excellent range of VVS colour enamels, in this case AMT-1 Light brown AMT-4 Green and AMT-12 dark grey over AMT-7 Blue. Personally I think the colours are just spot on, obviously this is going to be one of those areas of personal taste but they work for me, suitably roughed up with silver enamel paint chips and pastel weathering. All that matters in the end is that my mate Dai was happy with it and when he saw the finished result he looked like a kid at Christmas…result ."

Single-seat

Il-2 Single-seater ( Don Fenton ) - "Erik kindly sent me info on an Il-2 finished in tractor green. I finally finished the AM 1/48 kit in this paint scheme. All of the appropriate panels lines in the wings, fuselage and vertical stabilizer were filled to simulate a wooden wing aircraft. Otherwise is straight out of the box with decals from the scrap box. The tractor green is Humbrol #1 Eau-de-Nil. I found the combination of the bright, cheerful green paint streaked with the black war paint to be an irresistible alternative to the usual drab colors."

AM-38F, Double-seat

Il-2 Double-seater ( Paul Flint ) - "Accurate Miniatures Shturmovik built OOB with the addition of Fast Frames for the canopies. The AII Dark Brown is mostly Polly Scale's NATO tri-color brown with some Pactra gloss red to lighten it and give it some sheen. Since the photo does not show it with underwing ordnance I have left these off but left the rails and racks on for realism. There are a couple of different stories for the name on the sides of these planes. The Aeromaster sheet (48-199) was used for the name, but I found the stars too large and too orange so I used yellow bordered stars from the Techmod sheet."

Single-seat

Il-2 Single-seater ( Dale Jones  ) - "Basically, it is an Accurate Miniatures 1/48th scale Il-2. I chose to show both the summer gear and camo as well as the winter ski configuration and camo. I though it was kind of neat idea that I had not really seen before, plus it gave me a chance to use some different camo techniques. I included the ladder and push broom to show how the winter camo might have been applied during a campaign. Hurriedly and without too much attention to neatness. I found this to be a very nice kit to work on and put together. It required very little filling and there was virtually no flash on the pieces. I highly recommend this kit to most any skill level."

Single-seat

Il-2 Single-seater ( Valerio Sericano ) - "Il-2 single-seater Accurate Miniatures 1/48, that I built thanks to precious informations founded in your web site.
I like WWII history, and so, I usually add a pilot's history to assembly of my kits. This kit, according to the information brought by Mr. Erik Pilawskii posted in your web site, it was the Shturmovik flew by Sr.Lt. Gruishkov in the sky of Leningrad in September 1942, and this work wants to be a tribute, although modest, to his memory.
Without photo, I have painted my kit following your reproduction of aircraft belonging to the same group of Gruishkov's Ilyushin-2, (174 ShAPs), althought I know that every aircraft gone out of zavod with a personal camouflage, not using in that period in the VVS a fixed scheme as happened in the RAF.
About colors, I followed some indications of the kit of Mr Pilawskii's Shturmovik 1/72 of Gruishkov, using the scheme with medium bright green (AII green) and black. About green, being difficult to individualize a precise color, I used a tone very similar to the RAF fighters in 1940, supposing that when older, the color became darker. For black, in this unusual experimental camouflage, I introduced a small personal variation to the bluish color tone, because from photos of Mr Pilawskii's kit the tone of black seems more clear.
In consequence, I added to black a small quantity of brown dark color, getting a tone very similar to italian bruno (the color of the shirts of the Germans...).
I used acrylic colors LIFECOLOR, using the brush to give more prominence to the borderline among the two colors. Always according to Erik Pilawskii, the Gruishkov's Shturmovik associated a metal cell with back fuselage and wings in wood."

AM-38F, Double-seat

Il-2 Double-seater ( Fabio Dito ) - "Accurate Miniatures 1/48, model is O.O.B. except some little particulars. Painted with Model Master and Tamiya acrylic, Decal from Aeromaster."

Il-2 Single-seat

Il-2 Single-seater ( Chris Helton ) - "Accurate Miniatures out of the box, with camo of one from this web sight."

Il-2AM-38F, Double-seat

Il-2 Double-seater ( Paul Flint ) - "Accurate Miniatures IL-2 kit #3407 in 1/48th scale. The red stripe on the tail and the red/black spinner were to indicate this plane was a member of a fictional composite squadron composed of American, British and Russian planes. This model was painted with Pollyscale Acrylics: Underside Blue(AMT-7), Dark Tan (AMT-1), Medium Green (AMT-4), Dark Grey (AMT-12). I used the Testors GP1000 airbrush. This was also the first time I've used Fast Frames. If you have not used these than I would suggest you try them. They eliminate time-consuming masking, paint bleed-under and unwanted residue."

Il-2 Single-seat

Il-2 Single-seater ( Ian Robertson ) - This is the Accurate Miniatures single seat IL-2. The camouflage was painted with acrylics: Polly Scale black green and Testors Russian armor green uppersurfaces over Polly Scale Russian underside blue. Winter distemper was simulated using white Polly Scale paint, first applied by hand with a brush, then filled in with an airbrush and weathered.

Il-2 AM-38F, Double-seat

Il-2 Double-seater ( Ian Robertson ) - Accurate Miniatures kit, using the straight wing from a single seater and fuselage (slightly modified) from the two-seater. Paints are Polly Scale acrylics, decals are from my spares box.

Il-2 AM-38F, Double-seat

Il-2 Double-seater ( P. Laurent ) - Figures and accessories essentially from POMK.

Il-2 AM-38, Single-seat

Il-2 Single-seater ( Peter Vill ) - "1/48 scale Accurate Minatures kit. Machine Gun & Cannon barrels replaced with tube. Painted with AeroMaster Acrylics and finished using kit decals apart from the slogan on the side which came from the spares box. To be honest the hardest thing about this kit was getting the wings to fit to the fuselage, I am told the 2 seater is a much better fit."

Il-2 AM-38F, Double-seat

Il-2 Double-seater ( Hector Mirasol ). The Accurate Miniatures kit, basically out of the box.
