Part 1/72 Su-2 Photoetch (#72-155) for the ICM Kit

By Matt Bittner

The Part set is the only photoetch set that has replacement pieces for the flaps as a standard item. If you plan on replaceing the flaps and aren't interested in a lot of interior detail then the Part set is the one to purchase.

You start out by building up the rudder pedals (as all three sets have you do) followed by assembling the pieces for the instrument panel, including the usual clear film representing the instruments. From there other interior detail is added including plenty of parts for the rear 'pit. For the rear 'pit you not only get sidewall structure, but radios, some sidewall "shelfs" and other detail. Part also provides ample detail for the bomb bay area. More than Eduard, but not as much as Ace so if you feel a little apprehensive about detailing this area, the easiest to use is Eduard, followed by Part and the most comprehensive and time consuming set is the Ace one. Part not only includes separate flaps but also includes the door for the "tunnel gun" - the only set that doesn't come with this door is the Eduard one. One thing Part provides the others don't are photoetch frames for the main canopy sections. While I have yet to hear anyone succussfully use these the way Part intends, they're there if you need them for some other reason.

(What Part would have you do is the cut the "glass" from a clear plastic film (what they call "foil) and adhere the already bent frames to that. One person I know has tried it can't get the film to stay bent and always wants to "unbend" the photoetch frames. Plus the surface area is so small that gluing the frames to the model doesn't help, as the tension of the plastic film keeps popping the frams off the kit. One solution I had was the squash ("heat and smash") replacement clear parts from the kit parts sanded smooth. Then you would get the bend needed and can use the photoetch frames as they were meant to be used.)

Again a very nice photoetch set that could be used to advantage with the kit. Part supplied photetch canopy frames while the others do not.
