Yakovlev Yak-9 in 1/48th Scale

Yak-9T

Yak-9T ( Paul Flint ). "ICM Yak-9T in 1/48th scale built with only Fast Frames as aftermarket accesories. This plane is inspired by red 76 in Erik's Big Gun Fighters article, but I did not have a correct set of decals for it nor could I make my own then. The numbers are from ICM's Yak-7b "red 17" and re-arranged to be closer to 76. The Wood Use Aehrolak is a 50/50 mix of Pollyscale's Dark Ghost Grey and USSR Dark Topside Grey. The light grey I used is actually too light and looks more like Aeh-9 light grey than the AE-10 Medium Grey that is on the original plane. The pattern is from artwork that used to be on the site but was removed when the release date for Erik's book drew near, when his book arrived I noticed the pattern was different. Since this isn't 76 we can just say it is another plane in the same unit (520 IAP) using the same colors , but with a different pattern. These photos actually don't do the model justice as it is shot indoors and even with proper filtration (80A & 82A) the light grey has a tendancy to be too yellow."

Yak-9T

Yak-9T ( Peter Vill ). "ICM 1/48 Scale YAK-9T White OO served on the Southern Front with 293 IAP during 1944, unfortunately the pilot of this fine looking aircraft is at present unknown. We do know that the aircraft was built at Zavod 153 and was finished using AII Brown/Light Brown/Blue. Paints and decals supplied by E. Pilawskii. This aircraft is the subject of one of the pieces of art work contained within E. Pilawskiis book."

Yak-9K

Yak-9K ( Chris Tew ). "The ICM kit was built basically from the box with the following changes: The profile of the scoop under the nose was altered with scrap plastic and putty to match photos as closely as my skill would allow. The instrument panel and side consoles were redone in Adobe Illustrator to better match photos. Seat belts made from yogurt cup sealer were added. These changes are quite effective to the eye, but I used the kit canopy coated with Future/Klear, and they do not photograph through the thick plastic. Main wheel brake lines were added from copper wire. The stars were all replaced - I found the ICM decals to be very hard to work with as they tended to "stick" immediately and collapsed upon themselves when I tried to move them. I coated the numbers and unit insignia with Future/Klear to make them more substantial, and that worked well."

Yak-9T

Yak-9T ( Hector Mirasol ). "This is an ICM kit in 1/48.The model depicts White 29 of the 3rd IAP, 1944. The inside of the cockpit has been completely rebuilt. The engine has been super detailed using the kit's one as a base, and a couple of panels were also opened, just for the sake of it. The flaps were also scratch built and represented in the down position.. It was painted in the usual two grey camouflage typical of that stage of the war. The paints used are Aeromaster enamels, light and dark Russian grey and Russian sky blue. I still could not figure out what was the exact shade of aerolack in the inside so I had to guess it (Please, has anybody a chip of the colour?). Decals are also from Aeromaster."

Yak-9T

Yak-9T ( Peter Vill ). "Yak-9T, 1/48 scale kit by ICM, made from box with the addition of the photo etched set by "PART" and a replacement canopy from "Falcon" set number 37. The kit goes together very well with little filler being required. Painted using Aero Master acrylics, the decals used are supplied with the kit apart from the red stars which were replaced as the kit items are so thin that they take on the shade of the under colour. Painted in the scheme of an aicraft flown by 3 IAK at Kursk summer of 1943. Any one who builds in 1/48 is recommended to get one of these little gems."
