I-16 Type 24
I-16 Type 24 ( Iulian Macovei ). "As you already know, the ICM kit representing the Polikarpov I-16 Type 24 in 1/72nd scale is almost perfect. The single part being completely faulty is the windshield. Despite that fact I decided to build the model almost o.o.b with only few additions to the landing gear and cockpit. If your not in the rush, like I was, I suggest to make an windshield from scratch or by an aftermarket product (unfortunately such products are not available in my country). The markings for my model were inspired by an excellent article of this site, and represents the aircraft of the naval ace Alexei Denisov.
"The construction process followed the instruction sheet, the only areas were improvements were made being the cockpit and the landing gear. In the cockpit I've added the seat belts made out of metal sheets (from an old toothpaste tube ) painted in the appropriate colour. In the landing gear cavity I've added the two plexiglas windows (made from scratch, various materials) and the gear retraction cable (I think the diameter is a little oversized).
"In order to facilitate the painting process the model was not completed (the rudder, propeller and the landing gear parts being added at last). Model Master paints were used for the model with no primer. First the underside blue was applied. While the blue was drying, I painted the rudder in solid white. After that, masks made out of self adhesive paper labels (drawn in AutoCAD and printed using a common laser printer) were added for the white star and the tactical number and the whole part painted in red (a sort of inverse mottling). For the propeller spinner, the same technique. First the white colour and then a mask for the white sections (in fact, to simplify the geometry of the mask, there were five separate parts - each being a sort of a triangle with two slightly rounded sides. Next the rest of the model was painted red. The green colour was added last with all of the separation lines made with adhesive tape (lot of work using a cutter and a pair of scissors).
"In order to finish the model I've added the rudder, propeller and the landing gear. Instead of the original parts for the exhaust pipes I used medical needles of two different diameters (for those mounted single and in pairs). The same material was used for the starting rack in the propeller hub and the machine guns barrels in the wings. At last the whole model was covered with two coats of Model Master semigloss varnish."

I-16 Type 24 ( Ilya Grinberg ). A very nice Mosca finished as the famous "White 13" of the 2nd Guards. "I-16 of St. Leit. Surzenko, 2GvIAP VVS SF. Stock Hasegawa kit, mostly OOB, just added a gunsight and hand-painted slogans with white paint over ridiculous silver as provided on the decal. Used fine tubing for exhaust pipes."
